Thank you, ladies! My mailbox is full of emails from women extolling the virtues of this eco-friendly alternative to pads and tampons – the menstrual cup! This has really helped me make the switch. Thank you. Thank you. Also, almost everyone has mentioned that using the cup helped them understand their period and their bodies better. I will be sharing some of the stories soon. Here are parts from Pooja and Nirupama’s experiences. Thank you.
Pooja:
“I have been using menstrual cups for a year and consider it to be the most valuable find. Even though I read about it earlier, due to lack of visibility on online forums and the lack of information at the time, I was a bit wary. But that changed when I stumbled upon an article and looked it up on online stores and saw that it was readily available! And it was priced at Rs 500! And promised usage upto 10 years (unless your cat finds it and chews it up, like mine did).
I even remember reading a review saying, “This is amazing. You will wait for your period!” Crazy as it may sound, I think I now know what she meant.
Firstly, the environmental benefits are just too high to ignore the cup. And the whole process is far more clean and less messy if you really think about it. You don’t feel the flow as you do with a sanitary napkin.
I’d say at some level, menstrual cups helps you connect with your body in a different way.
Google queries showed women wondered how to pee while using a cup. Not judging, but it is unfortunate and speaks of how women haven’t connected with or rather haven’t been encouraged to explore their bodies. Menstrual cups are probably a small step in this direction.”
Nirupama
“I’ve been using menstrual cup for almost two years now. My friend helped me make the switch by telling me about the environmental and health hazards of sanitary napkins and tampons. I’ve always used sanitary napkins before the cup, and being a nature lover, the thought of producing so much waste on this planet broke my heart.
I didn’t know these products take more than a hundred years to decompose! I was shocked and immediately agreed to switch. Once I started using it, I realized these cups were much better than pads!
1) If not damaged, these cups can be used for at least ten years. Cost effective too.
2) No damage to the environment.
3) Body friendly. No proven health hazards, as compared to napkins and tampons leading to toxic shock syndrome (TSS).
4) Easy to use. No blood on the outside, hence no smell, no itching. (Even the pee is clean and one can poop without removing the cup!)
5) I don’t even feel I’m on my periods! Most women who use cups will tell you they forget they’re on periods.
6) You can do everything, including playing a sport!
It’s liberating, truly. And I’ve noticed some of the most common issues faced during periods are simply caused due to irritation of pads. I’m less irritable, for example.
I’m also very comfortable with my body after using cups, especially the vaginal area. The cup helped me understand my periods better, the colour and consistency of the blood can indicate a lot of things after all.
It’s a blessing! I wish it were available when I was in school!”
